Outlook 2003 with Lotus Notes

I’ve been waiting eagerly for this Outlook 2003 Notes Add-in. It connects to a Lotus Notes / Domino server backend. About time I got rid of one of these two memory hogging mail clients. I vote to kick Notes off the island.

Venture capital in developing nations

TMT Ventures is the first tech incubation fund / entrepreneurial finance company that I’ve seen in Pakistan. That’s an excellent start.

Visual Studio 2005 preview

MSDN has an excellent preview of Visual Studio 2005 (Whidbey) with screenshots, differences with previous version and mention of the future successor (Orcas).

Skype

Skype is free VOIP using P2P. How is that different from the built in audio conference features of msn and yahoo messenger? Well, for one they claim it works through firewalls, and secondly it features end to end encrypted communication.

What I’m interested in is the performance. I use MSN voice with people on dialups half way around the world. Let’s see if this results in speech I can actually decipher.

Process Explorer

More than a few times I’ve had to eyeball product performance using the statistics provided by task manager or the XP system performance charts. Process Explorer is a freeware utility for Windows that shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded. It’s an advanced replacement for task manager, also letting you hunt down processes that may have locked a specific file.

Jersey Girl

Rarely do I disagree with Roger Ebert, but his review of Kevin Smith’s Jersey girl was way off.

Clichéd, cloying and full of smart-alecky brats, the story is neither believable nor engrossing. If it hadn’t been for Liv Tyler I’d have walked out in the first half hour.

vwWare

wvWare is an open source library which allows access to Microsoft Word files. It can load and parse Word 2000, 97, 95 and 6 file formats. The wv2 project on sourceForge aims to extend the support to the Word XP file format. Unfortunately there seems to have been little activity beyond March 2003. But it’s a start. And this answers some of my questions about the Word file format.

Newsmap

Newsmap is a flash based application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News aggregator in the form of a treemap.

Con man conned out of $600,000

Harvard professor scams $600,000, then hands it to 419ers. Article on The Register.

Xu would not, however, admit that he had himself been played like a cheap violin by the Nigerians. “The scammer’s been scammed,” said detective Blair. “He wouldn’t acknowledge he’d been scammed. I tried to tell him he’d been scammed, but he never caught on.”

The Entrepreneurial Spirit

There’s a profile on my company’s founder and owner, Basit Hamid on outputlinks.com

OpenOffice 1.1 vs Microsoft Office

Microsoft has a two page data sheet up for resellers and partners serving as a competitive guide to OpenOffice.org.

This open source product includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. Sophisticated and flexible, OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office. It runs natively on Solaris, Linux and Windows.

I found two things interesting here. One, the brief and clearly stated anti competition message described for VARs and system builders. This is something we should be doing at least as well in my company.

Two, I’ve always been under the impression that reading and writing Microsoft Word files is difficult because the file format has been deliberately obscured. Now, here is an open source project that is file compatible with Microsoft Office. That’s a very good thing.

Digging around further, I found the file format description for Microsoft Excel. Where’s the doc on the Microsoft Word file format?
